What is Ayurveda?

Tuesday, January 8th, 2013

“Ayurveda” (the “science of life”) is the most ancient complete system of natural medicine in the world. It was developed in ancient India and refined over the ages. It combines physical, psychological and spiritual therapies in an approach to health that is as relevant to the modern world as it was to the ancient. Utilizing herbs and minerals, proper nutrition and purification and, above all, affirmative ways of living, Ayurveda treats not just the ailment but the whole person and emphasizes prevention of disease to avoid the need for a cure.

One of the principles in Ayurveda is that each person is made up of their own
particular mix of the three fundamental elemental energies, or ‘doshas’. Although we can’t see them, the three doshas are responsible for all processes of the mind and body. They affect our physical makeup and our mental and emotional qualities. These underlying forces determine who we are, what we like to eat, how thirsty we get, how much sleep we need, etc. They influence our reactions to stress and our predisposition to various illnesses. The doshas even affect how compassionate, relaxed, or talkative we are. Knowing a person’s dosha is very valuable in determining which foods, herbs and lifestyle changes will be most beneficial for their healing and overall balance. An example of this is a person who is skinny and runs around extra busy
and worrying about everything. In this person the ‘vata’ dosha is dominant.
Balance can be brought with warm and soothing activities and foods. Gentle yoga and relaxation massage are perfect. For an intense, high pressure, athletic person the ‘pitta’ dosha is dominating. Balance can be brought with cooling and calming activities and foods. This person should avoid things like eating spicy food everyday and going running in the middle of hot summer days.

Different doshas predominate in the different seasons as well. Therefore
it is helpful to have a basic understanding of them so you can self regulate your
diet and lifestyle. For example, in autumn the vata dosha increases. During
these months it is best to reduce foods that increase vata such as raw vegetables, beans, cold foods and foods that are dry and rough like crackers and pretzels, It is more balancing to increase richer foods and warm, cooked foods like soups and casseroles. In spring and summer the reverse is true for the most part.

There also exists within Ayurveda a whole science of longevity. This has
to do with purification, healthy balancing routines and mind and body exercises. Various cleanses are recommended seasonally. Yoga and meditation are important not only for mind and body health, but to connect with your spiritual source as well. These add up to peace, health and life extension.

Principles from ayurveda can be easily incorporated into one’s life to
bring further health and balance. It has been very helpful in treating and
advising my patients for many years.

Acupressure

Wednesday, November 28th, 2012

by Dr. Martin Orimenko – Live Well Holistic Health Center, Ardmore PA

Acupressure and acupuncture are ancient natural healing methods that have been around for more than two thousand years. These natural modalities are based on the idea that stimulation of specific points on the surface of the body stimulates the flow of vital energy which moves through our bodies along pathways known as ‘meridians’, separate from the nerve pathways. This vital energy keeps us healthy and balanced. The acupuncture points occur along these meridian pathways which course through our bodies from head to toe, dipping in and back out of the vital organs, and affecting every physiological function.

Acupressure and acupuncture have been effective treatment modalities for thousands of people seeking an alternative and natural treatment, especially when the modalities they were trying previously were either not working or were to invasive or dangerous, such as surgery. The way acupressure and acupuncture works according to traditional Chinese doctors is that the stimulation of select pressure points on the body “moves stagnant chi” or life force energy. According to TCM (traditional Chinese medicine), any lesion or problem area in the body will have stagnation of the flow of chi, and stimulation of certain points will clear this stagnation, bringing life force energy to the area, facilitating the body’s natural healing mechanisms. According to western science acupressure/acupuncture increases the flow of blood through the area, again facilitating the body’s healing mechanisms. It also relaxes muscles and reduces pain and inflammation.

Stimulating acupressure/acupuncture points by various means can facilitate hundreds of different positive effects in the body. In ancient times the points were stimulated with simple finger pressure. Later the Chinese used bamboo slivers. Then, when the industrial age unfolded, stainless steel needles were created and have been used ever since. With the new technological age came the development of refined electrical instruments and lasers and use of these devices for treating acupuncture points has proven to be very effective. Dr. Martin Orimenko uses both lasers and refined electrical instruments in his treatments as well as the original finger pressure or ‘acupressure’. This approach is gentle, harmless and highly effective. Kids love it!

There also exists a wonderful system of acupuncture known as ‘auricular therapy’ or ear acupuncture. There is a very detailed map of the entire body in the ear, three times more detailed than in foot reflexology, than can be extremely effective for treating many health issues. Not only are the body parts represented, but there are also specific points for a wide variety of conditions such as allergies, depression, hypertension, skin conditions, constipation and addictions, to name a few. Needles are often used, but I prefer a special instrument that not only detects imbalanced, low-energy points, but also treats them with an adjustable micro-amp electrical stimulation.

Acupuncture / acupressure is a wonderful healing modality that has withstood the test of time and is a great alternative to more invasive or drug related medical treatments. Acupressure and acupuncture can be used as alternative healing methods for treating sports injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, headaches, migraines, allergies and asthma, hormonal imbalances, PMS/Menstrual Imbalances, High Blood Pressure, Digestive Issues, Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Depression, Anxiety, Stress, Insomnia, TMJ, Children’s Health, ADD/ADHD and Fertility.

New Holistic Health Center Thriving in Ardmore

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

There are many reasons why people seek out holistic methods of healing. Some turn to these alternative therapies because they do not have medical insurance. Some believe in the healing power of the body and mind. Still others find it as a last resort to relieve chronic pain has persisted more traditional forms of treatment.

Whatever the reasons that bring you to the Live Well Holistic Center in Ardmore, Dr. Martin Orimenko will likely greet you, as he did for me. Patients there fondly call him “Doctor Martin.”

This story came about after several Main Line residents—unknown to each other, with various backgrounds and incomes, and under independent circumstances—spoke about their positive outcomes from treatment at Live Well.

Keeping in mind that there are some vocal, rather rigidly traditional physicians who take a dim view, in general, of holistic medicine and healing methods, we decided to focus simply on the experience, and report on it.

The atmosphere in the office is calm and comforting, and the open-air courtyard leading into the office sets the tone even before you enter the office. Once inside, Dr. Martin’s wife and co-founder of the center, Traci (who is also a holistic health counselor), welcomes you as if entering her home.

Empirical Point, LLC Launches “Healthy New Year 2011″ with Alternative Medicine

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

Philadelphia Healthy Living Events, News and Patient Information Programs and Tips & Guidance Featured as Part of Campaign for a Healthier 2011

Empirical Point, LLC, a leading Philadelphia Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine practice, located in Chestnut Hill, has launched a “Healthy New Year 2011” campaign to give patients more hands-on information and real-world tips about how to live healthier in 2011. This new program kicked off in early February and started with a series of online information and news, which can be found at www.philadelphia-acupuncture.com.

“Along with resolutions and promises to improve our health, the new year also brings a renewed commitment to living well and living healthy,” stated Sharon Sherman, M.S.O.M., D.OM., L.OM and founder of Empirical Point in Philadelphia. “At Empirical Point, we are committed to providing patients with a Chinese medicine and acupuncture practice dedicated to improving their health. I don’t just treat patients. I work together with them to get to the root of their ailments and conditions and to then map out an interactive and holistic plan to improve their overall well being. This Healthy New Year 2011 campaign is just one more way for us to interact with our patients and provide the latest news and tips on how to be well.”

Healthy New Year 2011 kicks off with “Alternative Medicine – Not So Alternative Anymore” – a program that is looking at the growing use and success of alternative medicine in the U.S. Despite the fact that Chinese Medicine and acupuncture have been used for thousands of years, they are just beginning to really take hold in many Western cultures as effective medical treatments. Empirical Point is using its website, blog, social media and events at its offices to explore and provide information about the growth of alternative medicine in the Western world – and how these “alternative” treatments may be helpful for patients who may have not yet considered them for common conditions like stress or chronic pain.

Healthy New Year 2011 campaign will also address the following topics later this year:

  • Pain – How to Address and Relieve it with Chinese Medicine
  • Building a Strong Immune System…and a Stronger You
  • Stressed? How to Relieve Anxiety and Be at your Best

Crystal Energy Healing Therapy

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Crystals have held our fascination for thousands of years by their energy and sheer beauty. Knowledgeable healers in every culture on Earth have used their powers since time began, and the amazing attributes of crystals can bring healing into our lives now, more than ever before.

How do they work?
“A crystal is a solid material, whose constituent atoms, molecules, or ions are arranged in an orderly repeating pattern extending in all three spatial dimensions.” This Wikipedia definition gives us a clue as to how they work: the key here is “orderly repeating patterns.” This is the latticework that allows energy to be transferred and transformed as it moves through the body of the crystal. The energy of the crystal attracts any negativity in the field and raises the vibratory levels until the field is in harmony with itself. From this comes a feeling of deep relaxation and replenishment.

Medical Intuition
As a Medical Intuitive, I gather information from your energy field about the systems, organs, chakras and auric layers that may be out of balance. This information allows me to then use the crystals to pull out negative energy, balance and charge the affected areas, “mend” torn or otherwise damaged parts of the field and create deep relaxation and well-being. We then talk about your particular situation, in light of the information that has come up. This is most effective when I have no prior information about your physical, mental or emotional states, but simply allow your energy field to reveal itself to me.

A typical session
Fully clothed, you lie on the massage table and relax, noticing whatever sensations might come up. To get the most out of the session, close your eyes and let yourself be carried by the pure healing energy coming through your energy field. You may become aware of tingling, pulling, lifting or light pressure, sounds or visual effects, which are all the results of the non-physical energy work. I will rarely touch you with my hands, to perform polarity balancing of the minor chakras. When the energy work is done, I will gently pull you out of your deep state of relaxation and we will talk about what came up for you, and the information I gathered from your field.

Healing the individual
The type of healing done in these sessions is completely tailored to the individual’s needs, because it is their energy field that determines which healing will take place. The most important or urgent issues will be the ones to surface first, usually during the initial session. In subsequent sessions, other information is likely to come up,
but these essions tend to be less involved than the first. The frequency of the visits will be determined by the client, who will become aware of the changes in their energy field, and will know intuitively when to come back for further treatment. Remember: this is your healing, and your energy field knows what it needs.
Become attuned to those needs, and you will be doing a great service to your health and well-being.

Effects frequently reported:

  • Profound relaxation
  • Regeneration and replenishment
  • Relief from pain
  • Increased awareness
  • Grounding
  • Reduction of stress and anxiety
  • Healing, both physical and emotional
  • Increased stamina and energy
  • Harmonization with one’s environment
  • Improved relationships

Please feel free to contact Sarah Murray of Pure Healing Insight, LLC for more information or to schedule a crystal therapy session.

Crystals: Powerful Tools of Transformation for Ushering in the New Age

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

Have you noticed how time seems to be speeding up? What you did just weeks ago seems like months, and it feels like we’re on a roller coaster, mostly on the way down! There may be a “logical” reason for this, as we approach the culmination phase of what the creators of the Mayan calendar might have called “the end of time”. Over a thousand years ago, they mapped out a calendar, using their knowledge of astronomy and astrology (the two were one and the same in the Western world until not long ago), which describes a time line from the creation of the Universe (Big Bang theory), some 15 billion years ago, to our present time, in the year 2012. The system is fairly straightforward, stating that from the beginning, time has been divided into 13 ages which all culminate in 2012, but in each one the speed of time is 20 times faster than the preceding one, and the length of the age is 20 times shorter that its predecessor.

What does this all mean for us? Since 1999 we have been in the second to the last age, which lasts only 12 years. During this time, the digital era has taken us for an incredible roller coaster ride, with technological advances being made faster than we can keep up with them. In the age preceding this one, which lasts some 250 years or so, the advances were much slower to come about, but still much faster than the age preceding it. Before that, things happened at an even slower rate, and the age lasted about 5100 years. This is all to say,
that we are natural beings in a natural world, responding to the natural unfolding of a time line that was started 15 or 16 billion years ago, and that was mapped out by the Mayan people, possibly to make sure that we, in this crucial time, are aware of this and will act consciously rather than react to a world that seems to have gone crazy.

In more practical terms, this signifies that we, human beings across the Earth, are in the middle of a process of time acceleration, and time, as the fourth dimension, is affecting everything that is happening to us and to the Earth. As we move into the final age, which starts in November of 2010 and lasts until October of 2011, time will accelerate again and things will happen 20 times faster than they are now.
The natural and man-made disasters that we have been witnessing in the past 12 years may become even more intense, and certain beings who want to control the outcome of this time line will trigger traumatic events in order to keep the power that they have been mongering for the past 6000 years. But this does not mean the end of the world,
quite to the contrary. I am not a soothsayer, but I know deep within me that we are at the dawn of a new age, and that the way to usher in this age is to embrace the values it embodies, such as brotherly love, compassion and peace towards all beings, human or not.
The raising of the level of consciousness of the general population is inevitable, and anyone who tries to manipulate the unfolding of the world events to their egotistical advantage, will need to come to terms with their inner self – and if they resist the tsunami of awareness
taking place on the planet at this moment, they will be swept away into the vast ocean of human awakening in spite of their will to control the world.

How can we, as individuals, survive the onslaught of craziness, and step into the fruition of our spiritual awakening?

First, the less we “buy into” the doom and gloom end-of-the-world scenarios that the powers-that-be would like us to believe, the better. Our energy is needed to build healthy, happy societies, not to cower in fear at what “might” happen, according to the “authorities” claiming to have a direct line to a future dictated by the results of a supposed apocalypse.

Second, it is absolutely vital that we each become keenly aware of what it is that we came here to do, and then start doing it, if we haven’t already done so. If you feel you are languishing away in a job
that has no real interest to you other than paying the bills, and your energy is down because of it, by all means, get away from it. We all need to have activities and interests that nourish our creativity and motivate us to move in a positive way, and if what we are doing is taking that away, it is not serving our best interest. As long as you open up to your inner self and learn to trust what it is telling you, you will be guided to the place/job/activity that is best suited for your talents. Easier said than done? Yes and no. The only real thing preventing you from doing this is your own resistance to change. So yes, it’s not always easy to go against your belief system, and if that belief system is serving you well, fine. But if it is making you believe
that the only way to survive in this world is to have a job that you don’t like, and that you’re lucky to have it because you have no real talents, and because the economy is so bad, etc., etc., then it is not serving you.

Third, we need to learn to love ourselves for who we are. No matter what “flaws” we think we have, be they physical or emotional handicaps, a crooked nose or a bad temper, they are part of us, and have served us in some way, even if we can’t seem to figure out how. When we love ourselves for who we are, those parts that we held in contempt for so long are finally recognized, and we become whole again. Then, we are able to see what gifts they brought us, and love them for that.

Crystals, one of Nature’s perfect creations, are amazing tools to use in our quest for self-awareness.They allow the transformation process to be accelerated because of the nature of their particular molecular makeup. Because of their structure, crystals pull low-frequency vibrations into their field and change their frequency through a
process called resonance. This is similar to when a musical note is played in a room full of stringed instruments, and the strings of all the instruments tuned to that frequency start to vibrate. The frequencies of the vibrations that are emitted by the crystal from its point or apex are higher and more balanced than the original vibration, and they cause the other vibrations present to start vibrating at higher frequencies. This is called entrainment.

Crystals can be used in many ways, and most people are familiar with putting them on or around the body, on the chakras or energy centers and in different strategic places around the body. I was taught by a French meta-physicist, 20 some years ago, how to use them to interact with the Human Energy Field in order to promote healing and well-being. I have since modified the techniques I learned and adapted
them to my own process, which involves the use of Medical Intuition to assess the physical and spiritual bodies of the individual. I then use the crystals to balance and energize the chakras, charge the actual organs and physiological systems of the body, align the spiritual bodies, transform “negative” energy into positive, repair energy leaks, etc. This process is akin to psychic surgery in many ways. Just one crystal therapy session can be a serious boost toward re-alignment with
your inner self and the realization of your dreams.

I am available to see clients in my new office in Trolley Square, in a space that I share with several holistic health practitioners, called “Healing Spaces”. If you are interested in having a consciousness-boosting, energy-giving, health-promoting session with me, please give me a call at (302) 507-6548, or email me at sarahnaturo@me.com.
