Acupressure

Wednesday, November 28th, 2012

by Dr. Martin Orimenko – Live Well Holistic Health Center, Ardmore PA

Acupressure and acupuncture are ancient natural healing methods that have been around for more than two thousand years. These natural modalities are based on the idea that stimulation of specific points on the surface of the body stimulates the flow of vital energy which moves through our bodies along pathways known as ‘meridians’, separate from the nerve pathways. This vital energy keeps us healthy and balanced. The acupuncture points occur along these meridian pathways which course through our bodies from head to toe, dipping in and back out of the vital organs, and affecting every physiological function.

Acupressure and acupuncture have been effective treatment modalities for thousands of people seeking an alternative and natural treatment, especially when the modalities they were trying previously were either not working or were to invasive or dangerous, such as surgery. The way acupressure and acupuncture works according to traditional Chinese doctors is that the stimulation of select pressure points on the body “moves stagnant chi” or life force energy. According to TCM (traditional Chinese medicine), any lesion or problem area in the body will have stagnation of the flow of chi, and stimulation of certain points will clear this stagnation, bringing life force energy to the area, facilitating the body’s natural healing mechanisms. According to western science acupressure/acupuncture increases the flow of blood through the area, again facilitating the body’s healing mechanisms. It also relaxes muscles and reduces pain and inflammation.

Stimulating acupressure/acupuncture points by various means can facilitate hundreds of different positive effects in the body. In ancient times the points were stimulated with simple finger pressure. Later the Chinese used bamboo slivers. Then, when the industrial age unfolded, stainless steel needles were created and have been used ever since. With the new technological age came the development of refined electrical instruments and lasers and use of these devices for treating acupuncture points has proven to be very effective. Dr. Martin Orimenko uses both lasers and refined electrical instruments in his treatments as well as the original finger pressure or ‘acupressure’. This approach is gentle, harmless and highly effective. Kids love it!

There also exists a wonderful system of acupuncture known as ‘auricular therapy’ or ear acupuncture. There is a very detailed map of the entire body in the ear, three times more detailed than in foot reflexology, than can be extremely effective for treating many health issues. Not only are the body parts represented, but there are also specific points for a wide variety of conditions such as allergies, depression, hypertension, skin conditions, constipation and addictions, to name a few. Needles are often used, but I prefer a special instrument that not only detects imbalanced, low-energy points, but also treats them with an adjustable micro-amp electrical stimulation.

Acupuncture / acupressure is a wonderful healing modality that has withstood the test of time and is a great alternative to more invasive or drug related medical treatments. Acupressure and acupuncture can be used as alternative healing methods for treating sports injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, headaches, migraines, allergies and asthma, hormonal imbalances, PMS/Menstrual Imbalances, High Blood Pressure, Digestive Issues, Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Depression, Anxiety, Stress, Insomnia, TMJ, Children’s Health, ADD/ADHD and Fertility.

About the Author: Dr. Martin Orimenko is a Chiropractor, Naturopath and Nutritionist who practices a unique blend of different holistic modalities in treating patients of all ages for a wide range of health conditions. Dr. Orimenko is currently available for treatments at his MainLine natural health center, the Live Well Holistic Health Center in Ardmore, PA Acupressure and Auricular Therapy are just a few of the modalities that he employs to support health and wellness in his natural healing practice. Other modalities include kinesiology, nutrition and cleansing, neuro-emotional technique, ayurveda, and natural supplement prescriptions.

Skin Conditions: A Natural Approach

Thursday, November 1st, 2012

by Dr. Martin Orimenko, http://www.livewellholistichealth.com

In my experience, most skin conditions are either caused by or made worse by heat and a toxic bowel. This is true for eczema, acne and even psoriasis.

From a natural medicine perspective, skin conditions are usually related to some issue with your food, nutrition or internal balance. I know from personal experience that diet and cleansing is key. You can soothe an itchy rash somewhat with topical treatments, but the real cure is internal. You can reduce pimples with various ointments, but for lasting relief you must address the inner physiology. The outer skin is a reflection of the ‘inner skin’ which is the lining of the alimentary canal (digestive tract). If there is inflammation and irritation in the digestive tract, then it perpetuates the same on the outer surface of the body.

Testing for food allergies and sensitivities, intestinal yeast overgrowth and toxicity, as well as for deficiencies of certain nutrients such as zinc and essential fatty acids are the starting points from an alternative health care perspective – using muscle response testing, also known as Kinesiology. This approach is quick, simple, non-invasive and provides highly valuable information about your specific body chemistry and imbalances. It might be necessary to address emotional factors and chemical sensitivities as well when treating skin conditions.

Finding a practitioner who does similar muscle response testing so together you can come up with a treatment plan that will work best for you and your body’s needs. In the absence of that, another approach is medical tests (blood, stool and allergy testing), or doing an elimination diet and ‘candida cleanse’ and see what happens. But the medical tests, elimination diet and cleanse can miss the mark at times. The muscle-testing is quite accurate. Patients can achieve excellent results by successfully clearing up frustrating and uncomfortable skin conditions by working with a holistic health care doctor to address the internal imbalances.

If you are experiencing nagging health issues, please consider making an appointment with an Alternative Health Care Practitioner who can examine any food sensitivities, allergies and/or other underlying issues to help bring your body back into balance.

New Holistic Health Center Thriving in Ardmore

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

There are many reasons why people seek out holistic methods of healing. Some turn to these alternative therapies because they do not have medical insurance. Some believe in the healing power of the body and mind. Still others find it as a last resort to relieve chronic pain has persisted more traditional forms of treatment.

Whatever the reasons that bring you to the Live Well Holistic Center in Ardmore, Dr. Martin Orimenko will likely greet you, as he did for me. Patients there fondly call him “Doctor Martin.”

This story came about after several Main Line residents—unknown to each other, with various backgrounds and incomes, and under independent circumstances—spoke about their positive outcomes from treatment at Live Well.

Keeping in mind that there are some vocal, rather rigidly traditional physicians who take a dim view, in general, of holistic medicine and healing methods, we decided to focus simply on the experience, and report on it.

The atmosphere in the office is calm and comforting, and the open-air courtyard leading into the office sets the tone even before you enter the office. Once inside, Dr. Martin’s wife and co-founder of the center, Traci (who is also a holistic health counselor), welcomes you as if entering her home.

Natural Allergy Solutions

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

Dr. Martin Orimenko, DC, ND, FIACA – Live Well Holistic Health Center

It seems like every other person suffers from allergies in the Spring time in most areas of the country. It can make you absolutely miserable and dramatically lower your quality of life for weeks at a time.
Helping people with allergies has always been a significant part of my practice and I’ve learned a lot over my 20 years in natural medicine.

My basic message to readers is that “the outside reflects the inside.” In other words, you will be susceptible to pollens, cat dander, dust, etc. that are outside your body, to the degree that your insides, namely your mucous membranes, are clogged, full of mucous, or otherwise imbalanced. The mucous membranes are the lining of your
alimentary canal that runs from mouth to anus. The primary problem area is the intestinal lining. This area is a perfect breeding ground for yeast (Candida albicans, a type of fungus). With things like antibiotics,
birth control pills, steroid drugs, tap water and a sugary diet all contributing to their growth, it’s no wonder it is such a prevalent health issue. Yeast overgrowth also directly contributes to chronic sinus infections, chronic colds and bronchitis, indigestion, brain fog, low energy and lethargy, and indirectly to a long list of other conditions.

The solution is balancing your intestinal tract by doing a little cleansing of a very specific nature for a few weeks. Restricting the foods that grow yeast and taking a good antifungal (natural, not Nystatin) can make a world of difference not only for allergies but for all the conditions mentioned above. And the effects are permanent, notwithstanding doing all the things to encourage yeast growth again.
It’s not the only way to help allergies but in my experience the majority of people derive enormous benefit from this type of cleansing.

I would be delighted to help anyone you know who is suffering from allergies. In an initial Holistic Health Visit, I’d use Kinesiologic Analysis to determine the best anitfungal for you, and in addition to giving you a full consultation and treatment to address your allergies, we’d get you set up with a cleansing program (typically 3 weeks, though it differs for everyone) to address your systems and the root of the problem.

There’s no reason to continue to suffer with allergies! Call us at 610.896.1554 and schedule an appointment today to start feeling better in as soon as a week from when you start a cleanse program specialized to your needs.

New Holistic Wellness Center Opens on the Main Line

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
by Traci Orimenko, Holistic Health Counselor

The Live Well Holistic Health Center is open for business in Ardmore, PA, and we’re very excited to be here in the heart of the Main Line, offering a natural approach to health and healing to the greater Philadelphia area.

Dr. Martin Orimenko, DC, ND, FIACA is both the director and one of the founders of the Live Well Holistic Health Center, and he is a Chiropractor, Acupuncturist and Naturopath.  Dr. Martin combines these modalities, plus nutrition, Ayurveda, and lifestyle counseling, neuro-emotional work, and Kinesiologic Analysis to patients in his comprehensive Holistic Health Visits.  We also offer massage and reiki therapy sessions at Live Well.

Dr. Martin has almost 20 years of experience as a holistic healer, and he has treated over 5000 patients at his prior practices in Sausalito, California (where for 7 years he had Sausalito Chiropractic www.sausalitochiropractic.com) and in St. Louis, Missouri (where for the 12 years prior he had The Healing Center).

We moved back home to the Philadelphia area so we could raise our son Alex surrounded by a large and loving family and immersed in the culture and communities in which we each grew up.  We’ve really appreciated being back home, in touch with our roots, and the four seasons, once again.

And it’s clear that people here on the east coast are looking for holistic natural approaches to common medical issues like digestive problems, allergies, blood sugar imbalances, cholesterol problems, hormonal imbalances, inflammatory conditions, skin problems, environmental sensitivities, chronic fatigue, as well as musculoskeletal problems,  headaches and general pain.  We are looking forward to supporting people in the Philadelphia Area with their health and vibrancy, using a natural approach to medicine.  We’ve found that this is almost always more efficient and effective, and also less expensive, than our traditional medical system with its costly pharmaceuticals and their long list of side effects.

What makes Dr. Martin Orimenko stand out from other holistic practitioners is that he employs a combination of each of these treatment modalities in each visit to treat the whole person.

Gentle Chiropractic & Bodywork
Chiropractic adjustments align your spine, relieve pinched nerves and facilitate healing by freeing up nerve energy. Bodywork alleviates muscle tension, corrects tendon and ligament issues and supports good posture.  Various physiotherapies stimulate blood flow, relieve muscle tension and reduce pain.  We also have a massage therapist available by appointment.

Acupuncture & Acupressure
Acupuncture and acupressure remove blockages in the flow of blood and vital energy, and specific points address specific health issues. These ancient approaches energize and balance organs and glands, and optimize the functioning of the body systems.

Nutrition and Cleansing
Through adjustments to your diet, gentle cleansing programs and prescribing specific nutritional and herbal supplements, we will correct deficiencies, support detoxification and stimulate healing, optimizing your wellness and longevity.

Ayurveda
We will support you in balancing your body and mind through lifestyle modification in the areas of diet, exercises and daily routine in accordance with your constitution type or dosha.

Emotional and Lifestyle Counseling
NeuroEmotional Technique removes the charge on emotional issues that impact your health and facilitates you in accomplishing your goals.  We also have a Holistic Health Counselor to work with you in focused sessions over a six month period to help you reach your optimum health and vibrancy by making small accessible changes in your eating habits and bringing more balance into other key areas of your life.

Natural Supplement Prescriptions
We stock supplements for a wide range of health conditions and general wellness. Dr. Martin will determine the optimum nutritional support for your needs.  He will work with you to develop a customized program to help you reach your health goals.

Holistic Medicine

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

Holistic medicine is a system of health care which fosters a cooperative relationship among all those involved, leading towards optimal attainment of the physical, mental emotional, social and spiritual aspects of health. It emphasizes the need to look at the whole person, including analysis of physical, nutritional, environmental, emotional, social, spiritual and lifestyle values. It encompasses all stated modalities of diagnosis and treatment including drugs and surgery if no safe alternative exists. Holistic medicine focuses on education and responsibility for personal efforts to achieve balance and well being.

Alternative medicine is often used by the general public and some healthcare practitioners to refer to medical techniques which are not known or accepted by the majority “conventional” or “allopathic” medical practitioners (usually M.D.’s). Such techniques could include non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical techniques such as Medical Herbalism, Acupunture, Homeopathy, Reiki, and many others. However, the term Alternative Medicine can also refer to any experimental drug or non-drug technique that is not currently accepted by “conventional” medical practitioners. As non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical techniques become popular and accepted by large number of “conventional” practitioners, these techniques will no longer be considered Alternative Medicine.

Ayurvedic Medicine
Ayurveda is the name of the 5000 year-old comprehensive system of medicine that combines natural therapies with a highly personalized approach to the treatment of disease. Ayurvedic Medicine places equal emphasis on body, mind and spirit, and strives to restore the innate harmony and balance in each individual. It involves a system of constitutional (metabolic body type) diagnosis and herbal therapeutics, cleansing methods, lifestyle and diet, designed to guide an individual back into harmony with his or her environment.

Homeopathic Medicine
Homeopathy is a system of medical treatment originated by Samuel Hahnemann in Europe 200 years ago. This natural and effective medical system is currently in use throughout the world, and is enjoying a renaissance in the United States. Philadelphia’s Hahnemann Hospital was founded as a homeopathic hospital, as was the Hospital of the Medical College of Pennsylvania. Homeopathic practitioners administer small but energetically-active doses of natural substances to persons with an illness, in order to “signal” their systems to respond more completely, so that the illness may be resolved. Treatment is based on each individual’s “constitution”, or unique qualities based on physical, emotional, spiritual, and historical elements. These natural medicines are regulated by the FDA and are manufactured under the strict guidelines of the Homeopathic Pharmacopea. Homeopathic treatment can be used in the treatment of people with acute, recurrent and chronic conditions.

Holistic Nursing
Holistic nurses have the unique ability to provide services which facilitate wholeness. The concepts of Holistic Nursing are based on a broad and eclectic academic background, a sensitive balance between art and science, analytical and intuitive skills, and the opportunity to choose from a wide variety of modalities to promote the harmonious balance of human energy systems. The holistic nurse assists people to assume personal responsibility for wellness.

Naturopathy
Naturopathy is both a therapeutic practice and a way of life. Based on precepts first established by Hippocrates, it is a philosophy, an art, and a science developed to maintain the human being in perfect health using ONLY NATURAL methods. Whatever our purpose in life, isn’t the best way to achieve that purpose to stay in optimal health? That’s how we were designed – to always stay healthy.

The human organism is an amazing piece of work: hundreds of thousands of subtle processes operate at split second speeds to maintain “homeostasis,” or balance, which translates into good health. As soon as one element changes, another kicks in to counterbalance whatever change the first element produced. It is constantly moving, a non-static equilibrium which obeys only the laws within which humans have evolved over several million years. These unchanging laws are the same ones that have governed nature and the universe for as long as we can tell, and are the Laws of Life as we know it.

Immunological Testing
Technologies now exist which allow the measurement of the cell populations directly involved in the immune system. These are referred to as T cells, B cells and natural killer cells. The immune system is our first line of defense against the constant assault by bacteria, viruses and environmental pollutants. A weakened immune system can result from improper nutrition, bacteria, viruses, stress, cancer, cancer treatments or depression increases susceptibility to disease. With medical supervision, and immune testing individuals may be better directed to complementary treatment programs.

IV/Chelation Therapies
Chelation Therapy is a method wich can be used for drawing toxins and metabolic wastes from the bloodstream. Chelating agents, administered intravenously, are used to remove arterial plaque, rid the body of toxic metals, and reduce internal inflammation. Chelation has been used with degenerative diseases, arthritis, diabetes, scleroderma, and lupus. By restoring circulation in the body, in some cases chelation therapy may help with cardiac and circulation problems. Chelation practitioners hold certification from the College of Advancement in Medicine, and require medical supervision.

Nurse Midwifery
Certified, alternative form of women’s health care, includes full-scope OB-GYN care with annual exams, birth control, breast checks, pap smearsand other gynecological testing, as well as prenatal care and delivery.

Osteopathic Medicine
Since its inception over 100 years ago, the central tenets of osteopathic medicine are on prevention as well as cure, and to treat the patient as awhole rather than narrowly focusing on a specific ailment. The best known part of osteopathy is osteopathic manipulation, which is based on an understanding of the inter-relationships of the structure and the function of the body. In treating patients, osteopaths generally utilize various formsof physical manipulation, which allow the body’s innate healing mechanism to operate more efficiently.

Chiropractors, Chiropractic Care, Physical Therapy

Friday, August 28th, 2009

This is primarily a physically oriented therapy which aims to normalize the activity of the nervous system through the manipulation of bones and joints. While some practitioners use the methods only to help musculoskeletal problems, most apply a sophisticated theory that misalignments of the spine may cause a range of diseases, from arthritis to hormonal disorders. Many chiropractors have sought additional training and integrate more mind/body, drug-free (or drugless) oriented approaches such as nutrition based on reflex testing, kinesiology, or neuro-emotional technique (NET).
